My Northbridge Photography Competition
Thank you to all budding photographers!
Congratulations to our winners!
Junior: Photo 1- Harry Coates, Subject: My Friend Blake
Senior: Photo 37 - Dennis De Caires, Subject: Northbridge Junction at Night
Why did they win?
Britta Campion (News Ltd Photographer) had the unenviable task of choosing the winning photos. Britta looked for photographic imagery that:
* effectively represents an aspect of life in the Northbridge area
* conveys substantial meaning to the viewer
* demonstrates creative / effective use of compositional elements, line, tone, texture, contrast, colour, that work together to form aesthetically striking imagery.
* shows a regard for the play of light ie. light and dark to form effective exposure.
* reveals a unique personal insight about an aspect of society, beyond the obvious.
Junior Winner - Harry Coates - 'My Friend Blake'
Harry's picture effectively represents an aspect of life in the Northbridge area. The picture speaks of the universal importance of community / family and friends in this case in the context of the suburb of Northbridge. It also has personal specific significance and brings forward the importance of Blake as a friend in Harry's life. Substantial meaning is conveyed to the viewer in a dual capacity. The photograph also demonstrates technical competence, an understanding of manual camera operation, for example the slow shutter speed to blur the flow of other students in the picture. The photograph is quite advanced conceptually especially for someone of junior age.
Senior Winner - Dennis De Caris -'Northbridge Junction at Night'
Dennis's picture effectively represents an aspect of life in the Northbridge area. While there were a number of strong images of the bridge in Northbridge submitted, which is obviously a key landmark in the area, Dennis's picture of some shops at night along the main street of Northbridge, I felt offered a contrast to the expected and offered a more unique interpretation of everyday life in the suburb. The main street of Northbridge operates as a hub for the surrounding community and anyone who lives in the area would be able to identify with the urbanscape pictured. The photograph also demonstrates technical competence, an understanding of manual camera operation, for example the slow shutter speed to create light trails through the picture, utilising the moving traffic at night.
